The annual World Water Week in Stockholm serves as an important arena for exchanging views and experiences among members of the scientific, business, policy, and civil society communities. This exchange is designed to push forward efforts related to water, the environment, livelihoods, and poverty reduction.
The theme for 2007’s event was “Progress and Prospects on Water: Striving for Sustainability in a Changing World.” Discussions focused on 9 key workshop themes:
- International targets and national implementation
- Progress in environmental public health
- Progress on management reforms for better services
- Progress on financing water services
- Sustainable water technologies in industry
- Building capacity for future challenges
- Water- a brake on economic development?
- Managing future consumer demands
- Making governance systems effective
In addition to the workshops, several plenary sessions, a high level panel on climate change, water and vulnerability, and various side events offered participants the opportunity to learn more about urgent development issues on water and ongoing reforms to address them.

The 2007 World Water Week in Stockholm aimed to
- Promote knowledge and a deeper understanding of the links between water-society-environment-economy
- Promote partnerships and alliances between individuals and organizations from different fields of expertise
- Review the implementation of actions, commitments and decisions in international processes
ADB’s participation in this event aimed to
- Strengthen or build new alliances in support of ADB’s Water Financing Program 2006-2010, which works to double investments, actions, and positive results in the water sector
- Promote new knowledge derived from its work in the field and learn from the experiences of other water stakeholders
- Generate inputs for ADB to assist its developing member countries boost
investments in sanitation

ADB organized a side event entitled Dignity, Disease, Dollars: Asia’s Urgent Sanitation Challenge to discuss why urgent sanitation action is justified and to present a suite of actions aimed at generating partners and investments for this sector. ADB also participated in various workshops and meetings to share its knowledge and activities on a wide variety of water issues.
