Inception Meeting on Good Practices for Urban Water Management in Asia

9 October 2008; Singapore

Background | Objectives | Organizers | Participants

The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) of the National University of Singapore was established in 2004 with the mission of educating and training the next generation of Asian policymakers and leaders to raise the standards of governance throughout the region. In June 2008, LKYSPP’s Institute of Water Policy (IWP) was confirmed as regional water knowledge hub for water governance by the Asia-Pacific Water Forum. Knowledge hubs are centers of excellence promoting knowledge exchange and capacity development on a variety of topics.

In September 2008, LKYSPP and ADB signed three letters of agreement on “Improving Water Governance in the Asia-Pacific Region.” The collaboration between LKYSPP-IWP and ADB specifies three activities

  • Case Studies of Good Practices for Urban Water Management in Asia
  • Regional Consultation Meeting on Improving Water Governance
  • Executive Leadership Program for City Water Managers

The first activity involves identifying good practices in the areas of water, wastewater, and stormwater management in 8 Asian urban centers. Colombo, Manila, Phnom Penh, and Singapore have already been identified as the first four cities. The activity also involves desk studies of other cities outside Asia which will be used as global benchmarks for Asian cities.

This inception meeting marks the beginning of the implementation of developing case studies of good practices for urban water management in Asia. Results will be disseminated at interim and concluding workshops scheduled in 2009.
