5th NARBO IWRM Training

18-25 February 2009; Hoi An, Viet Nam

Background | Objectives | Organizers | Participants | Venue

The Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO) was established to share integrated water resources management (IWRM) knowledge, strengthen river basin organizations’ capacity and effectiveness in promoting IWRM, and improve water governance. NARBO promotes IWRM in river basins throughout Asia through IWRM training courses, scheduled twice a year. Designed by a host organization in collaboration with partner institutions, the training courses focus on specific IWRM themes such as IWRM approaches and technologies, among others. Previous training courses were held in Thailand (2004), Sri Lanka (2005), Korea (2005), and Sri Lanka (2006).

Unlike the past 4 courses, this program adopted the case study approach, using the Vu Gia-Thu Bon river basin as the main case for increasing the participants’ proficiency in terms of introducing IWRM. Viet Nam’s Vu Gia–Thu Bon River Basin Organisation hosted the training, while Australia’s International Water Centre, the regional water knowledge hub for healthy rivers under the auspices of the Asia-Pacific Water Forum, provided training guidance and direction.

The training aimed to understand and implement IWRM in specific river basin contexts. Specifically, it aims to

  • Explain IWRM especially as it applies to the management of river basins, emphasizing its whole-of-water cycle and trans-disciplinary nature
  • Undertake a situation analysis of the Vu Gia-Thu Bon Basin, synthesizing the hydrological, biophysical, social, cultural, economic, political and governance dimensions of the river basin
  • Provide examples of keys for success in IWRM of river basins gained from the Vu Gia-Thu Bon Basin case study and those presented by other participants
