6th CITYNET Congress

7-11 September 2009; Yokohama, Japan

Background | Objectives | ADB Participation | Organizers | Participants

CITYNET, the Regional Network of Local Authorities for the Management of Human Settlements, promotes sustainable urban improvement initiatives in the Asia-Pacific.Since 1987, CITYNET has been helping local governments improve the sustainability of human settlements, and expand their capacities to effectively meet the emerging challenges of urbanization and achieve sustainable cities. Today, CITYNET has grown to become an international organization of more than 100 members in 22 countries, most of which are cities and organizations in the Asia-Pacific region.

This year, CITYNET is organizing its 6th Congress with the theme “Harmonious Cities for Our Future,” in Yokohama, Japan, in time with the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Opening of the Port of Yokohama. Over a thousand mayors, urban managers, and practitioners are expected to attend various activities in the congress.

In 2007, CITYNET partnered with ADB in an International Seminar on Sanitation at ADB Headquarters in Manila, Philippines to assist CITYNET members, other local governments and Asia-Pacific partners in addressing the region’s sanitation challenge. ADB is participating in the 6th CITYNET Congress to promote ADB’s ongoing work on sustainable cities, particularly in water supply, sanitation, wastewater management, and other emerging issues such as disaster-preparedness and climate change adaptation.
