ADB has committed itself to pushing the sanitation agenda forward through its Water Financing Program (WFP). Apart from the specific household access to sanitation targets set within the WFP, environmental sanitation also takes center stage.
The Asian Water Development Outlook 2007 says that a water crisis is emerging, traceable in part to polluted surface water sources, especially around cities. This is caused substantially by inadequate household and industrial sanitation coverage, treatment, and disposal.
ADB has taken a number of steps to push the sanitation agenda forward, including raising awareness and facilitating sanitation's inclusion in cities' and government's investment planning. However, more remains to be done in terms of boosting ADB's capacity and engaging with ADB's developing member countries (DMCs) to ensure increased sanitation coverage in individual countries.
The ADB-DMC Sanitation Dialogue focused on DMC's sanitation needs, barriers, options, and actions.
