Workshop on Developing Water and Climate Change Adaptation Guidelines

In December 2008, ADB and partners Network of Asian River Basin Organizations (NARBO), Center for River Basin Organization and Management (CRBOM), and National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) held a regional workshop to develop a strategy and action plans for climate change projection and adaptation. NAHRIM is the Asia-Pacific Water Forum's water knowledge hub on climate change adaptation.

A follow-up meeting in February 2009 produced a matrix of in-country and regional projects and activities with NAHRIM's involvement. One of these priority actions is the formulation of adaptation guidelines and climate change modeling for better projections.

The objectives of the meeting is to develop training materials and guidelines to support the use of a combination of modeling approaches (statistical and dynamic) that will deliver results to clients in the short and medium term.

The workshop will focus on the following aspects:

• Working Guidelines for Adaptation Strategies - Scope of the guidelines to be produced on a priority basis, taking into account ongoing and planned work of partners (focusing on urban water management and flood management).
• Status and Option in Developing Hydroclimate Modelling - Current state of knowledge, and development of working guidelines, for the development and conjunctive use of statistical and dynamic model-downscaling methods to develop better climate change projections for river basins (and large cities in these basins).
• Regional Cooperation and Knowledge Hub Services - Updates on
1. Regional initiatives, including the proposed ADB-supported regional technical assistance project and others
2. Work of the regional knowledge hubs NAHRIM, other hubs concerned, and candidate hub The Energy Research Institute (TERI), India
3. Terms of reference for the proposed Asia-Pacific Water Forum (APWF) Steering Group (SG) on Water and Climate Change.
