The new paradigm and approach to the 2.5 billion people who are still living without proper access to sanitation is to change the mindset and to consider sanitation as an emerging market worth US$ 1 trillion dollars. The World Toilet Summit and Expo 2009 continues to explore the use of conventional marketing wisdom and creative approaches to tap into this sunrise market. Hence, the theme for this year’s summit is “Creating the Blueprint for a Sustainable Sanitation Marketplace.” The conference will focus on three key focus areas; demand creation, developing the appropriate design and technology, and exploring creative financial mechanisms to fund sanitation related projects.
The World Toilet Summit conference series was first launched in Singapore in 2001. Since then, it has travelled to various cities around the world, including Beijing, Belfast, India, Moscow, Seoul, Shanghai, Taiwan, and Macau. This year, the summit is coming back to Singapore. ADB is helping to organize this year’s summit as it did last year, and is taking the lead in a plenary session on Financing Sanitation in Asia on 4 December. Singapore Minister Lim Swee Say, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, is invited as the summit’s Guest-of-Honour.

The Summit advocates the establishment of effective partnerships between private, public and people sectors, working together towards achieving sustainable sanitation.
It will address both urban and rural sanitation, dealing with issues that impede sanitation improvement, policies and guidelines to government implementation and regulation, good practices that could be adopted and others. The summit will also showcase initiatives and developments in these areas and aims to create a sustainable model by employing different approaches to reach out to the people at the “bottom of the pyramid.”
