Conference on Economic Cooperation and Opportunities in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS): Infrastructure and Private Sector Development

Purpose

The Conference will present the dynamic economic opportunities that have been created through a decade of sustained cooperation among the GMS countries. Infrastructure development in the subregion is helping to forge closer economic ties and is linking the countries and its peoples closer together. These developments in the GMS will be presented during the Conference, which will help promote the GMS Program in the US.

The Conference is sponsored jointly by ADB and Foreign Policy Magazine.In addition to the Conference, a special supplement on the GMS will also be featured in the June-July 2003 issue of Foreign Policy Magazine, a Washington-based global and political affairs magazine published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Objectives

At the end of the Conference, the participants would have:

  • understood the strategic importance of the GMS in the context of developing Asia
  • gained greater familiarity with the GMS Program
  • obtained information on the range of opportunities for private sector participation

The ADB would have:

  • promoted the GMS Program in the US
  • laid the groundwork for possible collaboration with US institutions on GMS Program activities
  • identified priority projects that are of potential interest to the US private sector.

Expected Outputs

Papers of presentors and discussants, documentation on the discussion, and GMS Supplement in Foreign Policy Magazine

Target Participants

Participation is by invitation only. Those invited include US chief executive officers of multinational corporations, representatives from international financial institutions, members of the diplomatic community based in Washington D.C., US government officials, research institutions, and academe.
