Greater Mekong Subregion: Tenth Ministerial Conference on Subregional Economic Cooperation

Yangon, Myanmar; 27-29 November 2001



Purpose

The 10th Conference is aimed at renewing and reinforcing the strategy and operational program under the ADB-assisted GMS Economic Cooperation Program (GMS Program) for the next ten years.

Objectives

  • To review the progress made under the ADB-assisted GMS Program since the 9th Ministerial Conference held in Manila in January 2000
  • To discuss the GMS Program strategic framework for the next 10 years
  • To review the institutional arrangements of the GMS Program, and discuss recommendations to strengthen the institutional basis of GMS cooperation
  • To undertake the signing of the quadrilateral agreement to facilitate the cross-border movement of goods and people in the GMS

Expected Outputs

  • Endorsement by the GMS Ministers of the GMS Program strategic framework for the next ten years
  • Endorsement by the GMS Ministers of recommendations to strengthen institutional arrangements under the GMS Program
  • Signing of the quadrilateral cross-border agreement
  • Ministerial Statement which will be released during the Press Conference right after the Conference

Target Participants

Participation is by invitation only

  • Ministers and senior officials from the six GMS countries, namely Cambodia, People's Republic of China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam
  • Representatives of donor agencies
  • ADB staff and consultants

Resource Speakers

  • Inaugural address for the Conference will be delivered by Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt, Secretary I, State Peace and Development Council, Union of Myanmar
  • Ministers from the six GMS countries will be the main participants and speakers of the Conference
