Power Transmission and Distribution Project
Afghanistan

The Project's objective is to improve power supply in the northern, southern, and eastern areas of the country by rehabilitating and extending power transmission and distribution systems. The Project will bring grid power for the first time to areas with high numbers of ethnic minorities, such as Imam Sahib and Sarepul, while bringing equal benefits to the wider population.

Ethnic groups such as Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, and others are present in the project area. The Summary Poverty Reduction and Social Strategy [ PDF ] confirms that no likely negative effects on indigenous peoples (IP) have been identified. Although socioeconomic change is likely to result from increased electrification, no negative effects are anticipated.

The Project's specific actions for IP include

  • establishment of a small fund for social development of minorities to mitigate any negative impacts
  • training project-affected minorities through a livelihood program, and
  • provision of assistance for small businesses or alternative income generation to eligible households

Location:
