Tonle Sap Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project
Cambodia

The Project will assist the Government in achieving its Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) Sector Investment Plan (2005–2015) national targets of increasing the percentage of the rural population with access to safe water to 50%, and of sanitation facilities to 30%. The Project aims to improve the quality of life and health of rural residents of the project areas.

The Summary Poverty Reduction and Social Strategy indicates that ethnic minority groups in the Project area include the Cham, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese. A few households of indigenous Chorng, Khuy, and Por were found in Pursat Province during the socioeconomic survey.

The Project will benefit all ethnic minority groups and indigenous households equally. The provision of RWSS options will not discriminate against any communities or households due to ethnicity. Specific actions have been incorporated into the project design, which include:

  • subproject selection criteria that consider ethnic balance in the selection of subproject villages
  • village mapping to identify where different ethnic groups live
  • water and sanitation user group (WSUG) boards are representative of the ethnic composition of the WSUGs
  • water use and hygiene education to incorporate the water and sanitation needs of different ethnic groups, and
  • the inclusion of ethnicity issues in the project guidelines.

Location:
The participating provinces are Battambang, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, Pursat, and Siem Reap. (Project Map)
