Agriculture Sector Development Project
Cambodia
The Poverty Reduction and
Social Strategy reports that the Muslim Cham constitutes
about 5% of the total population of the project area. They are mostly
lowland farmers and have the same life style as the dominant Khmer
people. However, their Islamic religious beliefs may limit the participation
of women in social organizations.
Other ethnic minority groups are the Vietnamese, Chinese, and the Suoy, mainly in the province of Kampong Speu. The Suoy communities, with access to upland valleys, are likely engaged in shifting cultivation.
The specific loan assurance ensures:
- At least 50% of the members of farmer groups will come from poor households
- at least 50% of the members of farmer groups are women
- ethnic minority groups will have equal opportunities to participate and benefit from the project.
