National Highway Sector II Project
India

The Project's main objective is to improve transport efficiency leading to expanded economic opportunities.

Affected people belonging to vulnerable groups such as scheduled castes (SCs), scheduled tribes (STs), and other castes are considered socially vulnerable and thus need special consideration so that they can benefit from the Project.

The Resettlement Plan [ PDF ] includes information on the SCs and STs who may be affected by land acquisition in the project area. The Resettlement Plan establishes that in their social behavior and interactions, SCs and STs are not disconnected from the mainstream population but are assimilated with them.

The Summary Poverty Reduction and Social Strategy [ PDF ] states that although the study did not indicate differential impacts between indigenous peoples (IP) and non-indigenous peoples in the project area, an Indigenous Peoples Development Framework (IPDF) was provided in case IP issues would be found in the subsequent subprojects.

The Indigenous Peoples Development Framework [ PDF ] indicates that NHAI will be responsible for implementing the project and for each subproject, NHAI will be responsible for preparing a social assessment. If the subproject has significant impact to IP, an Indigenous People Development Plan (IPDP) will be prepared in accordance with the IPDF. Further it is stated that NHAI will prepare, finance, implement and monitor the IPDP
