Community Water Transport Project (2004)
Papua New Guinea
The Summary Initial Poverty and
Social Assessment concludes that the traditional kinship system ('wantok') still permeates in the communities, which speak the same language. 'Wantok' kinship links the informal social systems of the clans. The Project will be implemented using the traditional organizational structure engaging the clans and village councils in infrastructure maintenance. The assessment also confirms that the project will not adversely impact on the existing traditional social systems nor any indigenous population.
The Project will reduce poverty in disadvantaged areas and provide direct and indirect benefits to the marginalized groups. The direct benefit of the project, includes, helping generate better household income to meet basic family welfare needs; increase personal safety and greater mobility. Indirect benefit includes: reducing geographical and gender disparity in enrollment at both primary and secondary school; lowering preventable diseases morbidity, and mortality; and improving family planning, HIV/AIDS awareness, and childhood immunization rates among the communities.
Location:
Nationwide. However, the Project will target communities and waterway
networks where the residents are economically and socially marginalized
due to deficient marine transport services (Map).
