Technology
The proposed initiative will take a subregional approach to address
two issues that affect poor farmers disproportionately in Cambodia
and Viet Nam: postharvest loss and quality issue, and managing seasonal
fluctuations in rice production. Emphasis will be on capacity building
at two levels: farmers intermediary institutions (FIIs) and farmers'.
Grant Development Objective (GDO)
The overall objective is to address food security issues and to
improve the livelihoods of poor farmers by reducing postharvest
losses in rice.
Project Purpose
This initiative aims to reduce post harvest loss in Cambodia and
Viet Nam through introduction of improved and cost effective storage
and milling technologies.
Expected Outputs
- three farmers intermediary institutions (government, NGOs, academic,
and/or research institutions) in each country will be capable
of training farmers in cost-effective postharvest technologies,
needs analysis, market survey analysis, and effective extension
of information to farmers;
- at least 800 poor households in 8 villages (2 villages in 2
regions in each country) will achieve greater return on rice;
- at least 10 rice millers in each country will utilize the improved
rice milling techniques;
- changes in postharvest practices and decreased losses will be
observed; and
- a postharvest network will be established and initial meetings
will be held to exchange information at national and regional
levels, and an operational plan will be developed to continue
network activities.
- Capacity Building for Farmer Intermediary Institutions (FIIs)
- Capacity Building for Poor Farmers and Rice Millers
- Strengthening Knowledge of Rice Markets
- Establishing a Rice Postharvest Network
