Scope

Under the project an innovative maintenance system will be developed and institutionalized to provide start-up support for rural infrastructure maintenance. It is expected to cover by project completion irrigation with a total command area of 30,000 ha and 2,000 km of rural roads.

Objectives

Overall Objective

To reduce poverty through job creation and better maintenance of rural infrastructure.

Project Purpose

To pilot innovative management arrangements for maintenance of rural infrastructure that are supervised and monitored by users including the poor.

Expected Output

The proposed maintenance system will impact on poverty through (i) job creation for the poor; (ii) sustained usage of infrastructure in the poorest areas, and (iii) economic savings as on-time rural infrastructure maintenance is cheaper.

Main Project Components and Activities

The Project will support four major components:

  • Establishing a sustainable maintenance fund (SMF)
  • Capacity building of poor caretakers and stakeholders
  • Sector policies development
  • Project management support
