Scope

The Project will pilot a sustainable microfinance scheme that will allow poor households to amortize the up-front capital costs required to electrify their homes. Implementation of the microfinance scheme will be supported by a training and public awareness program to strengthen the capacity of participating microfinance institutions and the Ceylon Electricity Board to address the needs of poor rural clients in obtaining and maintaining electricity services.

Objectives

Grant Development Objective (GDO)

Improve the quality of life and reduce rural poverty through better access to grid-connected electricity.

Project Purpose

Pilot a credit facility that will help poorer households attain grid-connected electricity for their homes in recently electrified villages.

Expected Outputs
  • 2,500 households avail of the facility to electrify their homes annually
  • Sustainability of microfinance fund confirmed through loan recovery rates in excess of 95%
  • Public awareness activities carried out in at least 100 villages per year
  • Documentation of lessons under the pilot for future scaling up of the scheme
