Project Summary

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank (WB) and the United Nations Development Programs (UNDP) have invited the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to co-sponsor a regional conference on the formulation and implementation of National Poverty Reduction Strategies (NPRS). This conference brought together participants from Government, the media, the legislature and civil society to discuss common issues and concerns.

The regional conference was organized with three core objectives:

  1. To review and exchange experience on the development of national poverty reduction strategies in Asia and the Pacific
  2. To identify obstacles and challenges countries face in designing and implementing their strategies; and
  3. To derive lessons for the future.
Project Outputs/Outcomes

The NPRS funding supported the participation of the government and civil society representatives from the Mekong Region, Indonesia, Timor Leste, People's Republic of China and Mongolia. The fund enabled ADB to play a role in maintaining strategic partnerships with key donors on poverty reduction strategy formulation and implementation monitoring. The Conference led to a much larger scale involvement of ADB in the 2nd conference on the same topic held in October 2003 in Phnom Penh.
