Project Summary

With the countries' commitments to the achievement of the millennium development goals (MDGs), governments are increasingly aware of the importance of addressing poverty or hardship reduction in their national development strategies. To do so, countries will need to:

  • collect, analyze, and disseminate the data required to assess poverty
  • develop the human and institutional capacities to utilize the data to develop poverty reduction policies in a participatory manner
  • monitor progress towards their achievement.

The goal of this regional technical assistance (RETA) is to assist Pacific developing member countries (PDMCs) to develop the capacity to formulate pro-poor strategies and budgets in a participatory manner, thereby enabling them to reduce poverty and achieve progress towards the MDGs.

The short and medium term objectives of the RETA are to enhance the capacity and demand, both within government and civil society, for the collection, analysis and effective use of consistent and quality data related to poverty and hardship.

The RETA will facilitate further consultation with stakeholders and initiate the establishment of the Pacific Poverty Data Program as the main information sharing and coordination mechanism for regional poverty data collection, analysis and monitoring activities in the region. This will seek to encourage the contribution of other development partners to the Program in order to build on, expand and extend RETA activities.
