ADB Approves Technical Assistance to Viet Nam for Third Road Improvement Project
The Asian Development Bank today approved a US$1.3 million technical assistance grant for Viet Nam to prepare a project to improve road communication in the country's economically depressed central region.
The Third Road Improvement Project envisaged under the grant will be designed to improve a 400-km length of Highway No. 1 (the country's main north-south traffic artery) between Nha Trang and Quang Ngai, and about 1,000 km of rural roads in the provinces through which this length of the highway passes.
The improved highway will open up the poorer provinces, particularly in the central region, to industrial activities (agribusiness and light industries in particular) and will improve farmers' access to regional markets.
The technical assistance also has a capacity-building component, to improve the capability of the Ministry of Transport and the Government's design bureaus to prepare feasibility studies and to apply international highway design, construction, and contract management practices.
It is envisaged that about 38 person-months of international and 40 person-months of senior domestic consulting services will be required to implement the technical assistance. The Ministry of Transport's Project Management Unit No. 1 will be the executing agency.
