ADB Supports Plan to Protect Coastal Resources in South China Sea

Plans by Cambodia, Viet Nam and the two Chinese provinces of Guangxi and Hainan to protect valuable coastal resources in the South China Sea will be supported by a technical assistance grant of US$2.7 million. The grant will be financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and administered by the Asian Development Bank.

The grant will help the concerned governments prepare strategic coastal and marine management plans. It will address national policies, national and local institutional responsibilities and coordination, local participation, information, management priorities, monitoring and other key issues. A major component will be plans for a marine protected area system to conserve precious biological resources along the western portion of the South China Sea.

The assistance will build on the results achieved under an earlier ADB technical assistance, also with cofinancing from the Government of Sweden, to improve coastal and marine environmental management in the South China Sea.
