ADB Helps Prepare Indonesia’s Network On Biodiversity Information
A technical assistance grant of US$700,000 to Indonesia from the Asian Development Bank will help prepare a project to institute an interactive, computer-based information network on the country’s biodiversity.
A national biodiversity information network project will combine the databases of various agencies and contribute to a global biodiversity information network.
Those who will benefit from the project include research and development agencies, industrial and commercial organizations, educational institutions, policymakers, planners, conservation managers, scientists, nongovernment organizations, and the public.
The technical assistance will prepare an investment program with four major components, including the establishment of a biodiversity information network center. The program will also focus on strengthening the capabilities of existing data providers; conducting training and comparative studies in Indonesia and other countries with similar resource information networks; and providing information for policy formulation and promoting public awareness, interest and participation in biodiversity conservation.
The Research and Development Centre for Biology of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences -staffed by 160 research specialists - will be the executing agency for the technical assistance.
