Visiting Sri Lankan Officials to Observe Gender Development Activities in ADB Projects

DHAKA, BANGLADESH (24 April 2005) - Four senior officials of the Government of Sri Lanka arrived yesterday for a seven-day visit to observe and study gender development activities in projects being supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in rural areas of Bangladesh.

The visit is part of gender development - related capacity building initiatives being supported by ADB.

The team will visit livestock development, rural infrastructure, small-scale water management, and crop diversification projects in Bogra, Sherpur, Natore, and Rangpur districts being implemented by Local Government Engineering Department, Department of Agriculture Extension, and the Palli Karma Shahayak Foundation.

The delegation consists of:

  4. Mr. Gamini Kularatne
    Project Director
    Southern Province Rural Economic Advancement Project
    Ministry of Southern Regional Development

Nelun Gunesekera, an ADB Gender Specialist in its Resident Mission in Sri Lanka, is accompanying the team.

The Asian Development Bank is dedicated to reducing poverty in the Asia and Pacific region through pro-poor sustainable economic growth, social development, and good governance. Established in 1966, it is owned by 63 members, with 45 from the region. In 2004, it approved loans and technical assistance worth US$5.3 billion and US$197 million, respectively.
