ADB Awards Best Performing Projects in BangladeshDHAKA, BANGLADESH (28 November 2005) - In recognition of efficient project implementation, ADB has issued awards to its three best performing project teams. The awards were handed out by the Bangladesh Resident Mission to the North-West Crop Diversification Project (NCDP), which was executed by the Ministry of Agriculture; and two projects executed by the Local Government Engineering Department of the Local Government Division - the Rural Infrastructure Improvement Project [ PDF ] and the Rural Infrastructure Component [ PDF ] of the Emergency Flood Damage Rehabilitation Project. [ PDF ] Handing out the plaques and certificates yesterday to the project directors, coordinators and project representatives was ADB Country Director Hua Du. Senior government officials, award winning project team members, and ADB officials attended the awards ceremony at the BRAC Center. "The awards were given in recognition of the project teams' excellent performance, cooperation, efficiency and transparency in procurement, effective project implementation, achievement of targets, innovations, strong leadership, overcoming project start-up delays, women's empowerment and other criteria," says ADB Bangladesh Country Director Hua Du. The NCDP, which covers 60 upazilas of 16 north-western districts, aims to diversify and intensify high value crops and improve the rural marketing system, management and infrastructure. The Rural Infrastructure Improvement Project is helping to alleviate rural poverty, through improvement of upazila and union roads, rural markets and union parishad office complexes in 16 districts of south-western Bangladesh. The Project will enable farmers to reach markets more easily to sell their produce and buy seeds and fertilizer, and provide easier access for rural children to schools. Hundreds of destitute women are being given jobs to plant trees and maintain the roads, and the rural population will get access to health and other social services provided by the Government and nongovernment organizations. The emergency flood project is helping to rehabilitate rural infrastructure, roads, railways, water resources and municipal infrastructure damaged by the 2004 floods. ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in the Asia and Pacific region through pro-poor sustainable economic growth, social development, and good governance. Established in 1966, it is owned by 64 members - 46 from the region. In 2004, it approved loans and technical assistance totaling $5.3 billion and $196.6 million, respectively.
