ADB Awards Best Performing Projects in Bangladesh
Dhaka, Bangladesh, 06 December 2006

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has awarded three best performing ADB-supported project teams in Bangladesh at a ceremony in its Dhaka office today.

The award-winning project teams are: the Urban Governance and Infrastructure Improvement Project (UGIIP), and the Second Small Scale Water Resources Development Sector Project (SSSWRDSP) both being implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and the Second Primary Education Development Program (PEDP-II) implemented by Directorate of Primary Education, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

Hua Du, Country Director for ADB's Resident Mission in Bangladesh handed over the plaques and certificates to the project directors, coordinators and project representatives. Senior government officials, award winning project team members, and ADB staff attended the ceremony.

“The awards were given recognizing the project teams’ excellent performance, efficiency, integrity, transparency in procurement, effective project implementation, achievement of targets, innovations, strong leadership, overcoming project start-up delays, efforts in women’s empowerment and other criteria,” says Hua Du.

The Urban Governance and Infrastructure Improvement (Sector) Project aims to promote human development and good governance in selected municipalities to enhance management accountability and strengthen capabilities in providing services, develop physical infrastructure and urban services to increase economic opportunities, and reduce vulnerability to environmental degradation, poverty and natural hazards.

The Second Small Scale Water Resources Development Sector Project aims to improve livelihoods and reduce poverty by assisting stakeholders to form water management associations and to upgrade physical facilities including flood management, drainage improvement, water conservation, and command area development.

The Second Primary Education Development Program (PEDP-II) is a large sector wide approach to primary education, undertaken by the Government of Bangladesh supported by 11 development partners with ADB as the lead agency. Launched in July 2004, PEDP-II aims to provide quality primary education to all eligible children in the country and contribute to sustainable socioeconomic development, and equity as envisaged in the MDGs.

ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in the Asia and Pacific region through pro-poor sustainable economic growth, social development, and good governance. Established in 1966, it is owned by 66 members - 47 from the region. In 2005, it approved loans and grants for projects totaling $6.95 billion, and technical assistance amounting to $198.8 million.
