ADB Workshop to Promote Gender Equality
DHAKA, BANGLADESH - Mainstreaming gender in all its operations is a key strategy of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in promoting gender equality. The Bangladesh Government's Policy for the Advancement of Women has also adopted mainstreaming as an approach to promoting gender equality. Since gender and development is the common strategy of both ADB and the Government, ADB supported projects integrate gender aspects in the project design and activities. The projects address gender aspects through incorporating special design features and implementing strategies and action plans to this effect. Some of the projects have achieved substantial success in promoting gender equality in the sectors.
A day long workshop on Gender and Development was organized by the Bangladesh Resident Mission of ADB to share experience, lessons and approaches and seek practical ideas from the participants for attaining the common goal of gender equality through ADB supported projects. The workshop was held in the Conference Room of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Agargaon, Dhaka, on 14 January 2004.
About 54 participants comprising of representatives from executing agencies, project directors, project gender focal points, gender focal points of various ministries and selected consultants of ADB supported projects attended the workshop.
ADB Country Director in Bangladesh, Toru Shibuichi, chaired the inaugural session of the workshop. Mr. Mirza Tasadduq Hussain Beg, Secretary ERD and Mr. A. M. M. Reza- E- Rabbi, Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs was present as the Chief Guest and Special Guest respectively.
The business sessions of the workshop was chaired by Mr. A. M. M. Reza- E- Rabbi Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Ms Ferdous Ara Begum, Joint Secretary of the same Ministry.
