Net Casters

Men net fishing in a Vietnamese river. Subsistence fishing is a source of livelihood for millions of poor families throughout Asia, providing them with food and sometimes a small income. Poor fisherfolk have suffered lately from dwindling catches caused by over-fishing and mismanagement of water resources. Polluted waters kill both fish and their habitats. Toxic chemicals concentrate in certain fish, endangering the health of those who eat them. The Asian Development Bank supports projects that help poor people manage their ecosystems to protect their fresh water and food supplies.

This painting is one of a series of watercolors by artist Dave Parker painted with water from rivers, standpipes, rainwater, floodwater, and public faucets in developing countries across Asia and the Pacific to raise awareness of water scarcity and quality.
