The River Boys

Joyful children playing in the Mekong River demonstrate that the river is important for fun and recreation in addition to its utilitarian uses. The Mekong is an international river shared by six countries: Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, the People's Republic of China, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Over half the available water resources for both Cambodia and Viet Nam come from the Mekong River, making them dependent on a resource over which they have only partial control. To facilitate cooperation among countries that share water resources such as the Mekong River, the Asian Development Bank supports projects that develop and manage transboundary water resources, encourage information sharing, and establish mechanisms to foster greater cooperation.

This painting is one of a series of watercolors by artist Dave Parker painted with water from rivers, standpipes, rainwater, floodwater, and public faucets in developing countries across Asia and the Pacific to raise awareness of water scarcity and quality. It was painted using water from the Mekong River collected from the Cambodian side. To learn more about the WaterColors series send an email to water_colors@adb.org.
