Saffron Sadhu

A holy man stands in the shallows of a Nepalese river. Water is purifying. In rivers such as the Ganges in India it is believed to hold divine properties. All major religions and cultures recognize water as essential and central to life and it is used as a sacred symbol in a variety of ceremonies and rituals. All people, whether rich or poor, young or old, male or female, need access to clean water to sustain life.

This painting is one of a series of watercolors by artist Dave Parker painted with water from rivers, standpipes, rainwater, floodwater, and public faucets in developing countries across Asia and the Pacific to raise awareness of water scarcity and quality. The original was painted using rainwater from Nepal. To learn more about the WaterColors series send an email to water_colors@adb.org.
