Stay Still
A mother bathes her child in an Indian garbage dump. Water is used to cleanse our bodies, our clothes, our dishes, and our children. Water used for personal hygiene should be clean, but most poor people in Asia have to make do with contaminated water that can cause infections or skin diseases when used for bathing or stomach disorders when used for drinking. Every year, water-related diseases kill several million Asians-many of them mothers and their babies. The Asian Development Bank's water policy, Water for All, supports the ADB strategy for poverty reduction and provides for the direct involvement of the poor in water projects. This painting is one of a series of watercolors by artist Dave Parker painted with water from rivers, standpipes, rainwater, floodwater, and public faucets in developing countries across Asia and the Pacific to raise awareness of water scarcity and quality.
