The Water Boys

Children sell drinking water while floodwaters rise in Manila. The irony depicted in this scene is all too typical during the Asian monsoon rains. The rivers and drainage systems overflow, yet drinking water is still a precious commodity. The poor in Asia pay as much as 20% of their income for basic water needs because they often have no access to piped water. Where there is little or no piped supply, vendors deliver water in bottles, jerry cans, or trucks. The Asian Development Bank supports projects that alleviate the inequity of water distribution in cities by replacing water vending with piped water supply.

This painting is one of a series of watercolors by artist Dave Parker painted with water from rivers, standpipes, rainwater, floodwater, and public faucets in developing countries across Asia and the Pacific to raise awareness of water scarcity and quality.
