Paradise or Paradox?

Islanders tend to daily chores away from the tourist milieu. Tensions between poor communities and upscale tourism development often manifest themselves through freshwater challenges. These can include deficient supply, pollution of rivers from inadequate sanitation systems and poor solid waste management, and lack of conservation. Seasonal heavy rainfall followed by drought creates competition among households, tourism, and agriculture. Water-related illness is common among poor islanders, particularly the children. The Asian Development Bank is working with partners in small island countries to help create sustainable systems to manage water, sanitation, and hygiene.

This painting is one of a series of watercolors by artist Dave Parker painted with water sourced from rivers, standpipes, rainwater, floodwater, public faucets, and commercial outlets in developing countries across Asia and the Pacific to raise awareness of water scarcity and quality. The original image was painted with artesian water from the Fiji Islands and spring water from the mountains of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.
