Project Summary

The TA is a pilot project that addresses basic social and economic needs of communities in buffer-zones of protected areas by implementing activities and providing incentives to reduce poverty and promote conservation of natural resources and wildlife in selected protected areas by:

  1. participatory needs assessment
  2. development of integrated package of assistance
  3. building institutional mechanisms for sustainability

The major activities of this TA include the following:

  • Conduct scientific assessments of biodiversity resources in protected areas, and prepare management plans for the six sites
  • Enhance institutional capacity for protected area management
  • Conduct participatory assessments to develop a strategy to reduce poverty and protect natural resources
  • Pilot alternative livelihood schemes and social protection measures
  • Enhance food security by increasing range of food
  • Contract with NGO through Micro Finance Investment and Support Facility for Afghanistan (MISFA)
  • Prepare a gender strategy
