Project Summary

The GMS is rich in resources but with the high level of poverty incidence there is concern that increasing development activities in the economic corridors may adversely affect critical ecosystems and high value biodiversity areas resulting in fragmentation of natural landscapes. This TA aims to enhance the environmental sustainability and social equity of the GMS economic cooperation program by providing technical, operational, and financial support to upgrade the environmental management capability in the GMS. The TA will be implemented within the framework of the Regional Cooperation Strategy and Program (RCSP) and the Core Environment Program (CEP) and its flagship component, the Biodiversity Conservation Corridors Initiative (BCI) which was endorsed during the GMS environment ministers’ meeting in Shanghai in May 2005 and the second GMS summit in Kunming n July 2005.

The key components of the TA are:

  • Environmental assessment of economic sector strategies and corridors
  • Biodiversity conservation and BCI implementation
  • Environmental performance assessments and sustainable development planning
  • Development and institutionalization of GMS capacity for environmental management
  • Program development, delivery, and sustainable financing
