TA 4142: Fighting Poverty through HIV/AIDS on Road Projects in Yunnan Province - People's Republic of China
Financed by Poverty Reduction Cooperation Fund
Project Summary
In 2003, ADB approved the Western Yunnan Road Development Project that connects Kunming
and Ruili to near border of Myanmar. It is expected that the road project would result in
mobilization and immigration of people from outside the communities thus leading to higher risks
of transmitting sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.
The TA will implement prevention program to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV/AIDS.
The program will include information and education campaigns against HIV/AIDS, training of
social workers who will serve as educators to affected people, distribution of pamphlets and
information materials and distribution of condoms. The TA will also improve the monitoring and
evaluation procedures to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
