Project Summary

The TA will help determine the viability of a proposed loan to improve management and disposal of urban solid waste in RMI. It will promote public awareness and ownership of urban waste management, improve institutional arrangements for urban waste management, and design a sustainable solution to urban waste management.

Key activities will include:

  1. undertaking extensive stakeholder consultation;
  2. assessing the institutional framework for solid waste management and reviewing relationships between central government, municipal government, and civil society;
  3. strengthening local capabilities for continued participation in improved environmental management and delivery of other public services;
  4. initiating design of an urban waste management system; and
  5. providing guidance for the replication of best practices from the pilot case study to other areas outside Majuro and RMI municipalities.
