TA 6308: Scaling Up of the Social Protection Index for Committed Poverty Reduction – Regional
Financed by Poverty Reduction Cooperation Fund

Type: Study, Pilot
Duration: 18 months
Executing Agency: Asian Development Bank
Person Responsible: A. Weber
South Asia Agriculture, Natural Resources and Social Services Division
Amount: US$900,000
Project Summary

This regional TA aims to expand the social protection index (SPI) for committed poverty reduction strategy to all other ADB developing member countries, based on the successful pilot project that initially covered six countries, with the similar title RETA 6120, cofinanced by the Fund in Support of the Formulation and Implementation of National Poverty Reduction Strategies (NPRS) and the PRF. The pilot TA resulted in the creation of a methodology for calculating a social protection index (SPI), which permits both inter-country comparisons and the monitoring of a country's social protection activities over time.

The social protection index (SPI) will be used to measure developments and to compare countries in their efforts to reduce poverty through social protection. Developing the SPI would also help to define social protection with view to each individual DMC in addition to helping improve statistical information on social protection.
