Help for Herders

The Asian Development Bank is providing assistance to cushion the effects of the back-to-back harsh winters that have hit Mongolia, including the expeditious release of US$5.5 million under ADB program loans and an agreement to accelerate implementation of health and education projects. In 2000, the dzud affected half a million people and killed 3 million head of livestock. The destruction is expected to double in 2001.

Ochirsuh used to be a herder in Mongolia's Uvurhangai province. But the dzud—a harsh summer drought followed by a winter of heavy snowfall and biting temperatures—wiped out nearly all his animals.

Of a hundred cattle, only a lone cow remained. Of a hundred sheep, only six survived.

Left without a choice, Ochirsuh and his family moved into temporary quarters near a sum (village center) so they could receive aid.

A herder his entire life, Ochirsuh must find a new livelihood. He said he would move his family to a nearby town to start a business. What kind of business, he couldn’t say.
