Asia Is Key to Solving Global Poverty Challenge, President Kuroda Tells UN General Assembly

President Haruhiko Kuroda told the UN General Assembly on 16 September that, with two-thirds of the world’s poor residing in Asia and the Pacific, the MDGs could not be achieved unless they are also met in the Asia and Pacific region.

He explained that the region has made significant progress, but highlighted that “achieving all the MDGs by 2015 still requires massive investments in services and infrastructure to meet basic human needs”.


Joint UNDP, UNESCAP, ADB Regional Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Report Launched: ”A Future Within Reach”

A Future Within Reach: Reshaping Institutions in a Region of Disparities to Meet the Millennium Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific was released by UNDP, UNESCAP and ADB ahead of the United Nations World Summit. Despite progress made, much still needs to be done to achieve the MDGs in Asia-Pacific by 2015.

Multilaterals Must Be More Responsive to Developing Countries' Needs, Says President Kuroda at WB and IMF Annual Meetings

In Washington, DC for the World Bank and International Monetary Fund annual meetings, President Kuroda emphasized the need for deeper cooperation among development partners. He also participated in the Clinton Global Consortium on Tsunami Recovery, and the G8 Summit Follow-up on Investing Framework for Clean Energy, and the Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Development.

Asian Development Outlook Update: Healthy Expansion Expected in 2005 and 2006, But Challenges Ahead

Developing Asia's healthy expansion is expected to continue, with growth projected of 6.6% in both 2005 and 2006, according to the Asian Development Outlook 2005 Update published by ADB on 8 September. But the impact of higher oil prices constitutes a major source of uncertainty.


Asia Pacific Key Indicators 2005 Launched

ADB's Asia Pacific Key Indicators 2005 is an annual statistical compendium of economic, financial and social indicators. It also contains a special report Labor Markets in Asia: Promoting Full, Productive, and Decent Employment. The report assesses the current state of labor markets in Asia and the Pacific, and presents recommendations for expanding employment options in the region.


2005 Asia Economic Monitor: East Asian Growth Moderating, But Still Robust

East Asia is expected to experience a moderate slowdown in economic growth this year with the external environment turning somewhat less favorable and oil prices reaching record levels. Current forecasts for East Asia GDP growth average 6.8% for 2005 according to the Asia Economic Monitor (AEM). The report is available on the Asia Regional Information Center (ARIC) website.

ADB to Adopt New Financing Approaches to Better Respond to Development Needs

ADB has approved three pilot initiatives that will improve its business model by removing bottlenecks to respond better and more quickly to its clients.

The initiatives include new financing modalities (sub-sovereign lending, multi-tranche loans, risk sharing), local currency financing and a new approach to cost sharing.

President Kuroda Announces Over $6.5 Billion in Assistance to India

In concluding his first visit to India on 1 September, President Kuroda said that ADB is ready to raise its development assistance to US$6.5 billion over the next three years.

ADB Plans $4.5 Billion in Assistance to the People’s Republic of China

ADB plans assistance totaling about $4.5 billion for the People's Republic of China over the next three years, according to a Country Strategy and Program Update endorsed by ADB's Board of Directors in September.

Significant Increase in Annual Assistance of $3.7 Billion to Pakistan

President Kuroda reaffirmed ADB's long-term partnership to support Pakistan's economic growth with an expected assistance of $3.7 billion over 2006-2008.

UNDP, IDB and ADB Hosted First Joint Forum on Remittances in Manila on 12 and 13 September

Focused on “Remittances and Poverty Reduction: Learning from Regional Experiences and Perspectives”, the conference aimed at sharing best practices to help overseas workers send funds home at lower costs and with greater reliability.

Leaders Commit to Stronger Partnerships at Second GMS Summit in Kunming, PRC

Prime ministers of the six countries sharing the Mekong River concluded their two-day Summit on 5 July by issuing the Kunming Declaration that renews their commitment to achieve an integrated, harmonious and prosperous Greater Mekong Subregion through forging stronger partnerships.

Pacific Liaison Office Opens in Sydney

The Pacific Liaison and Coordination Office (PLCO), opened in Sydney on 3 August, will better respond to the needs of Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu and build up stronger ties with development partners in Australia and New Zealand.

The report was presented at the 6th Asia-Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production in Melbourne, 10–12 October.
