ADB Bars 40 Firms, 33 Individuals on Corruption Charges
A recent report released by ADB's Integrity Division cited that 40 firms and 33 individuals were barred in 2005 from participating in ADB-financed projects, which brings the cumulative total
to nearly 250 firms and individuals banned from working for ADB since it began investigating corruption allegations in 1998.
"ADB will not tolerate corruption in ADB-financed projects or its staff," says ADB Auditor General Peter Pedersen. "The measures taken against these firms and individuals illustrate our commitment to fully investigating
allegations of corruption and taking action against those who violate the ADB Anti-Corruption Policy."
The Integrity Division, a part of ADB's Office of the Auditor General, which is tasked with enforcing the bank's Anti-Corruption Policy, received 199 complaints last year. This was a 44% increase in the number received in 2004 and resulted in 102 investigations

ADB Brings Microinsurance to Poor Households in Sri Lanka
Formal insurance service is almost non-existent for poor households in Sri Lanka. Poor people often have to cushion the effects of shocks such as illness, fire or theft by borrowing from informal sources, withdrawing their savings, or selling their assets.
The $600,000 Technical Assistance grant (TA) will help the Government to develop the microinsurance sector in Sri Lanka by reviewing the existing insurance policies in the country and recommending improvements based on successful microinsurance schemes in other countries. The Government will contribute US$155,000 toward the TA's total estimated cost of US$755,000. The Ministry of Finance and Planning is the executing agency for the TA, which will be carried out over eight months to September 2006.
