News Release: ADB Approves Loan to Boost Power Supply in Central Philippines

ADB approved a private-sector loan of up to US$120 million to a joint venture between the Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) of the Republic of Korea and SPC Power Corporation (KSPC) of the Philippines. The loan will fund the building a 200-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Naga City, Cebu that will provide essential power to the Visayas region.

News Release: ADB, Philippines Mark New Clean Energy Investment on Copenhagen Sidelines

On 17 December 2009, ADB Vice-President Ursula Schaefer-Preuss met with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on the sidelines of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen to discuss a major new investment in the Philippines under the Clean Technology Fund (CTF).

SM Supermalls are the latest partners of the Department of Energy (DOE) in the switch to compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), a project to make the Philippines incandescent-bulb-free by 2010. News Release: ADB More Upbeat on Emerging Asian Economies for 2009 and 2010

ADB's Asia Economic Monitor forecasted growth by 4.2% in 2009 and by 6.8% in 2010 for the 14 economies of emerging East Asia, including the Philippines.

Jaime Jose Aboitiz, president of Davao Light and Power Company, hands over compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to a resident during the launch of the ADB-funded energy efficiency project dubbed "Kambiyo Bombilya," at SM City–Davao on 11 December 2009. ADB was represented by Carmie Ricerra, of the Southeast Asia Regional Department.

A package of reforms, investments, and long-term strategies must be instituted by the Government of the Philippines to free the country from persistent poverty, which is constraining its economic and social development, according to a new ADB study.
