    Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo visited ADB's Manila Headquarters on 19 December to participate in the celebration of the 40th anniversary of ADB. Read more

    ADB to Assist Leyte Landslide Area with $3 Million Grant

    ADB is assisting the victims of the February 2006 landslide in Southern Leyte province, Philippines, with a $3 million grant from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, financed by the Government of Japan. The money will be used to rehabilitate and reconstruct key infrastructure facilities in the province of Southern Leyte that were damaged by landslides, including rebuilding roads, upgrading hospitals, and building schools.     Signing of $650 million ADB Loans

    Rajat Nag, Director General of the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Southeast Asia Department (left) and Finance Secretary Margarito Teves shake hands after signing two Philippine loans namely the $450 million Power Sector Development Program and the $200 million Financial Market Regulation and Intermediation Program. It is the largest ADB lending assistance to the Philippines in eight years. It is the strongest evidence of ADB's commitment to the ADB-Philippines development partnership and shows ADB's confidence in the Philippine government's ability to sustain its achievements in fiscal consolidation and sectoral reforms.

    ADB Working to Build a Stable and Reliable Power System in the Philippines

    ADB is lending $450 million to help stabilize the power situation in the Philippines. The funds will assist the Philippine Government in restructuring the power sector, considered crucial to improving the country’s fiscal imbalance and investment climate. Read more.

    ADB Promoting Economic Growth in the Philippines through Assistance to the Financial Sector

    ADB will promote economic growth in the Philippines through a loan of $200 million to develop a more efficient financial sector. The funds will be used to support the Philippine government’s efforts to broaden and deepen the financial system, strengthen governance in the non-bank financial subsector, and improve efficiency in the securities market.     Health officials from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines are gathering in Jakarta tomorrow to discuss how to boost the three countries' capacity to fight emerging and endemic infectious diseases in the region. Read more

    Supreme Court Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban and three associate justices recently visited the Asian Development Bank's Library after paying a courtesy call on Haruhiko Kuroda, ADB President. From left are Eveline N. Fischer, ADB Deputy General Counsel; Evelyn T. Dumdum, Program Director, Supreme Court Action Program for Justice Reform; Associate Justice Adolfo Azcuna; Associate Justice Antonio Carpio; Associate Justice Leonardo Quisumbing, Chief Justice Panganiban; Arthur Mitchell, ADB General Counsel, and Nelia Balagapo, ADB Law Librarian.

    Chief Justice Panganiban meets ADB President

    Supreme Court Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban recently paid a courtesy call on Haruhiko Kuroda, Asian Development Bank President at the ADB headquarters in Manila. Chief Justice Panganiban and President Kuroda discussed ongoing assistance to strengthen the independence and accountability of the Philippine judiciary. Development institutions like ADB recognize the key role that the judiciary plays as arbiter of fairness in the economic system.
