Metro Manila mayors unite to combat dengue

Uncontrolled urbanization and environmental degradation increase the transmission of dengue. As part of a regional technical assistance, a dengue summit to kick off the 2008 anti-dengue campaign in the Philippines was launched 26 June by the Philippine Secretary of Health, attended by representatives of Metro Manila mayors. President Arroyo Inaugurates ADB-funded Public Market in Mati, Davao Oriental

Mati City in Davao Oriental marked its 1st anniversary with the inauguration by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of its modern public market. The market is funded by ADB's Mindanao Basic Urban Services Sector Project. Read the full story [ PDF: 13kb | 1 page ].

ADB Board consultation visit of projects in Bicol

ADB Executive Director Marita Magpili-Jimenez and Alternate Executive Director Siew Juan Aw hold a dialogue with residents of Barangay Paulbe, Ligao City, Albay to inspect a rural water supply project funded by the ADB's Infrastructure for Rural Productivity Enhancement Sector or INFRES project which empowers LGUs to identify and develop projects based on their own design and implementation process. 9 to 11 June
13th Poverty and Environment Partnership Meeting on "Sustainable Management of Our Economy and Environment"

The Asian Development Bank hosted the 13th PEP Meeting on 9-11 June 2008 in Manila, Philippines. Sessions for the first day focused on the theme of "Poverty and Environment Linkages: Sharing Experience from the Field," the second day on "Poverty, Climate Change, Environmental Finance, Emerging Issues," and the third day for general PEP business and other meetings.

Maynilad water services on the mend: Rebidding Processes Infuses New Life to a Struggling Concessionaire

A year after the takeover of new shareholders in 2007, Maynilad has paid off its debts and begun a capital expenditure program. Solicitor General Agnes Devanadera and Maynilad President Rogelio Singson discussed the rebidding process that aided the transformation at a presentation during the Water Community of Practice catchment series. In photo is Mr. Singson receiving a plaque of appreciation from Arjun Thapan, Director General, Southeast Asia Regional Department, while Secretary Devanadera looks on. ADB Grant for Renewable Energy Projects in Negros Occidental

A P7.4 million 32kw micro-hydro power plant in sitios Vergara and Magtuod, Barangay Bug-Ang, Toboso, Negros Occidental was recently commissioned as part of a US$1.5 million grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), through its Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction funded by the Government of Japan. RENEW Negros is an innovative poverty reduction project to pilot renewable energy and livelihood development in the province's poor off-grid rural communities. At the power plant commissioning are (front row, from left) Mayor Evelio Valencia of Toboso; Kohei Noda, Financial Attache, Japanese embassy; Yongping Zhai, ADB Principal Energy Specialist; Jim Orprecio of Winrock International which is implementing the project; and Rico Rivera, chairman of the Vergara Magtuod Development Cooperative, the project beneficiary. Another 32kw micro-hydro power plant, with a project cost of P7.6 million, was commissioned in Sitio Balea, Barangay Laga-an, Municipality of Calatrava.

MOU Signing: Microfinance Fund for Renewable Energy Project in Negros Occidental

ADB, through its Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction funded by the Government of Japan, is providing a $350,000 microcredit fund (RENEW Fund) as part of a $1.5 million renewable energy project in the Philippines. The project will help poor communities acquire household electricity connections and provide livelihood opportunities in 11 off-grid areas of Negros Occidental province.
