    ADB Philippine Office website and e-newsletter receive PR awards

    The Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) recently bestowed Anvil Awards of Merit to the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Philippine Country Office website and e-newsletter for effectively communicating the ADB-Philippines Development Partnership by using both electronic Public Relations tools.     ADB Book Cover Design Contest to be Launched

    MANILA, PHILIPPINES - ADB is inviting talented student artists who are bona fide college students in Metro Manila to submit entries to a cover design competition of its flagship statistics publication "Key Indicators of Developing Asian and Pacific Countries". Read the news release.

    Appreciation for ADB assistance to Early Childhood Development Project

    OIC-Secretary Luwalhati Pablo of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) (at right) presents a plaque of appreciation to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), represented by Cecile Gregory, ADB Director, Institutional Services Division, for the Bank's support to the Early Childhood Development Project during a Recognition Program on 31 January 2006. More than 3 million children benefited from the project which addressed poverty in regions VI, VII and XII by providing services and supporting activities to ensure survival and promote the development of children from ages 0 to 6. Ms. Gregory supervised the Project as Task Manager during its initial stages.

    ADB President Offers Sympathy, Support after Philippines Landslide Disaster

    ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda today offered his deepest sympathy following a landslide disaster that hit Southern Leyte Province, Philippines, yesterday morning and said his organization stands ready to assist. Read the news release.

    A US$1.2 million ADB technical assistance (TA) grant will help Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines fight the spread of communicable and infectious diseases and to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Read the news release.

    • ADB Starts Greening Its Roof Decks
      In its effort to promote and achieve the objectives of ISO 14001 in the workplace, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) started to green the roof decks of ADB headquarters. The roof gardens are designed to provide greenery on the building's flat roofs and put the bare space to good use and introduce the concept of roof gardens. Wood scraps were also reused as plant boxes. The roof deck is an ideal place for the plants to get sunlight while serving as excellent air filters to help reduce smog and cool the air particularly in the country's tropical climate. ADB's ISO Secretariat, in support of ISO objectives, is leading earth-friendly initiatives to increase the awareness and involvement of ADB's employees in helping reduce the institution's "environmental footprint."     • Lilo-An's "Decentralized" Waste Water Treatment Facility Improves Cebu's Beaches

      In this small town of 80,000 inhabitants, a bold initiative of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Manila has made a significant contribution to the improvement of coastal environment. On 23 November 2005, Lilo-an municipality, DENR and ADB inaugurated a decentralized water treatment facility which is going to clean all waste waters from a public market in Poblacion, which was known to be an environmental "hot spot" at Lilo-an's beach. This market had been polluting this popular weekend beach of the Cebuanos for many years, and had caused headaches and health concerns to many of the city's visitors and its administrators.
