European ambassadors visit ADB's Metro Manila projects

The ambassadors from Belgium, France and Italy ride the new Pasig River ferry service which was financed under the Pasig River Environmental Management and Rehabilitation Sector Development Program of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). ADB funded the ferry stations that will initially serve two 150-seat, air-conditioned ferries. From left (first row) are Patrick Pillon, ADB Executive Director; Ambassador Gérard Chesnel, France; Atty. Zoilo Andin Jr., deputy director, Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission; (second row) Ambassador Grégoire Vardakis, Belgium; and Ambassador Rubens Fedele, Italy. The ambassadors also visited a resettlement housing and a materials recovery facility at the former Smokey Mountain garbage site and the Strategic Private Sector Partnerships for Urban Poverty Reduction (STEP UP) urban development projects in Caloocan and Malabon.

ADB Launches Major Public Finance Knowledge Center in Manila

ADB is supporting a regional knowledge center focused on public finance that opened in Manila. The Robert F. De Ocampo Center for Public Finance and Regional Economic Cooperation is operated in partnership with the Center for Research and Communication Foundation.

President Arroyo Launches Pasig River Ferry Service

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo greets ADB officials at the launching of the Pasig River Ferry Service at the Malacanang Park, Manila. $250 Million Loan to Support Philippines Policy Reforms

The US$250 million Development Policy Support Program loan to the Philippines will support a series of reforms aimed at improving the investment climate, better managing the country’s finances and helping the poorest and most vulnerable members of society.

ADB Governor for Germany visits Smoke Mountain recycling project

The Honorable Karin Kortman, Parliamentary State Secretary, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, who is Governor for Germany in the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Board of Governors, pours cement on the new site of a new materials recovery facility (MRF) in Smokey Mountain funded by the ADB's Poverty and Environment Program for the Sambayanan Kristianong Muling Pagkabuhay (Parish of the Risen Christ) cooperative. The project, which is being implemented by Sustainable Project Management (SPM) Philippines, aims to improve the lives of some 30,000 poor families in the area. With Governor Kortman are SPM Philippines' Bert Guevarra, Mike Lindfield, ADB Principal Urban Development Specialist, and Sebastian Paust, ADB Alternate Executive Director (3rd to 5th from left, respectively).

$42.8 Million Assistance Package for Philippines to Help Improve Marine Resources and Coastal Livelihoods

ADB is helping the Philippines strengthen its fragile marine ecosystem through a $33.8 million loan [ PDF: 637kb | 76 pages ] for a project to improve coastal resource management and boost livelihoods of fisherfolk. ADB will also administer a $9.0 million Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant for the project.

East Asia should build now on its recent economic achievements to forge ties that can achieve a vision of lasting stability and prosperity for the region, ADB's President Haruhiko Kuroda told leaders attending the Second East Asia Summit in Cebu.

ADB President Participates in BIMP EAGA Summit

ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda participated in the summit meetings of the 3rd Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit, and the 2nd Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Summit, as part of the 12th ASEAN Summit in Cebu which was attended by their respective heads of state.
