Harmonization Workshop at ADB

A joint government-development partners' meeting was held on 21 Feb 2008 in ADB to report on the progress on the Harmonization Agenda and updates on preparations for the Third High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (HLF-3) in September to be held in Ghana. Property scam in the Philippines misusing ADB's Name

The Integrity Division of ADB's Office of Auditor General has re-issued a 2006 advisory against a property agent in the Visayas misusing ADB's name to convince owners to sell their properties. Read the advisory.

ADB Donates Books to Philippines Government Law Libraries

The ADB Information Resources Center recently donated 4,000 books to the libraries of the Supreme Court, Department of Justice, Department of Foreign Affairs, Court of Tax Appeals, Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas and University of the Philippines' College of Law, among others. Philippines Energy Summit Concludes with Action Plans

The Department of Energy led over 2,500 energy sector stakeholders in presenting the summit findings and recommendations to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the closing event of the ADB-supported 2008 Philippine Energy Summit on 5 February at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Specific action plans of the Philippine Government were proposed to cushion the impact of oil price increases, as well as optimize the role of energy efficiency and renewable energy towards energy independence. Tom Crouch, Deputy Director General, ADB Southeast Asia Department gave closing remarks.

Philippines Phasing Out Incandescent Bulbs to Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - In a first for Asia, the Philippines plans to phase out inefficient incandescent bulbs in favor of more energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut household energy costs. Read the full story.

Philippines Energy Summit consultative workshops

The Department of Energy with ADB support discussed critical energy issues - recent oil price increases and their impact, role of clean energy and biofuels, and power sector efficiency -- during the consultative workshops. Secretary Angelo Reyes of the Department of Energy delivered a keynote address while Rajat Nag, ADB Managing Director General delivered the Welcome Remarks. Presentations were made by Tom Crouch, Deputy Director General, ADB Southeast Asia Department and Sohail Hasnie, ADB Senior Energy Specialist.

Philippine Development Forum: Governance and Anticorruption Working Group meeting

The Philippine Development Forum Working Group on Governance and Anticorruption held a meeting on anticorruption and governance in the Philippines. The meeting, co-chaired by Jaseem Ahmed, Director, Governance, Finance and Trade Division, ADB Southeast Asia Department, discussed accomplishments in 2007 and plans for 2008. Financial Support Helps Philippine Electric Cooperatives Bring Power to Remote Areas

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Residents in remote areas of the Philippines with limited access to electricity may see light at the end of the tunnel with new financial support from Japan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) that targets electric cooperatives. Read the full story.

ADB Assists in Fighting Dengue in the Philippines

Tom Crouch, Deputy Director General, ADB Southeast Asia Department, and the Philippine Health Secretary Francisco Duque launched an anti-dengue campaign. With 45,000 dengue cases and 416 deaths in 2007, dengue is becoming an increasing health concern in the Philippines. An Anti-Dengue Campaign assisted through regional technical assistance 6108: Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of SARS, Avian Influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases was launched 21 January by the Secretary of Health Franscisco Duque and Deputy Director General, SERD on 21 January 2008. It was attended by representatives of the Departments of Education, Interior and Local Government, barangays, and the media.
