US Officials Visit Philippine Projects

Executive Director Curtis S. Chin (US representative to the ADB Board of Directors), Ms. Rachel Leatham (Financial Economist and ADB Desk Officer in the US State Department's Bureau of Economic, Energy & Business Affairs in Washington DC), Christopher Grewe (Director's Advisor) and Logan Sturm (Director's Advisor) visited the Nueva Ecija Federation of Dairy Carabao Cooperative (NEFEDCO) milk project funded under the Agrarian Reform Communities Project in Talavera, Nueva Ecija. The US delegation also had a briefing on the North Luzon Expressway rehabilitation project.

Southeast Asia Faces Soaring Economic Costs If Climate Change Action Delayed

Southeast Asia, one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to climate change, faces a poorer future unless global warming is controlled, says a new Asian Development Bank (ADB) study.

ADB-funded Public Market is Inaugurated in Surigao del Sur*

A P21.8-million public market constructed under the ADB-funded Mindanao Basic Urban Sector Services Project (MBUSSP) being implemented by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) was recently inaugurated in Barobo, Surigao del Sur.

Philippine Launch of Asian Development Outlook 2009

Tom Crouch, Deputy Director General, ADB Southeast Asia Department, gives the regional and Philippine economic forecast to Manila-based journalists. The Philippine economy is likely to decelerate this year, with the gross domestic product to expand by 2.5% this year - down from 4.6% in 2008 and 7.2% in 2007. The economy will recover slightly to 3.5% in 2010, assuming that the global economy and trade will pick up late next year.

ADB Reception Honors Host Nation Philippines and Development Partners

President Kuroda hosted a reception on 27 March to honor the Government and people of ADB's host country, the Philippines, and other development partners. Guest of honor was Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The ADB reception was held to "celebrate the strong bonds that have been forged among the many communities we represent," President Kuroda told the more than 350 guests attending. They included Philippine Government officials, members of the diplomatic community, international development partners, business communities, and civil society. Read the news release.

ADB Approves $50M Loan to Improve Rural Health Care Services in the Philippines

The ADB Board of Directors approved a US$50 million loan to improve the quality of health care in the Philippines, and to make these services more accessible and affordable to the poor. Read news release.

Former President Ramos Attends ADB Forum on Impact of Global Financial Crisis

President Kuroda welcomed participants at the opening of the forum. Former IMF Managing Director Michel Camdessus followed with a keynote address, while former Philippine President Fidel Ramos also shared his views on the crisis.
