    27 April
    President Arroyo inaugurates Can-asujan Irrigation Project in Cebu
    President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo unveils the marker of the P585.7 million Can-Asujan Small Reservoir Irrigation Project during its inauguration on April 27 at Barangay Can-Asujan in Carcar, Cebu. Assisting the President is Administrator Baltazar Usis of the National Irrigation Administration. Also in photo is Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia (left).

    Strategic Private Sector Partnerships for Urban Poverty Reduction (STEP UP) book launched

    Michael Lindfield, ADB Principal Housing and Development Specialist, receives a copy of "Keeping in STEP: Forging Partnerships, Changing Lives", a book on best practices of the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction-funded STEP UP project from officials of the Philippine Business for Social Progress, which is implementing the project in selected urban poor communities in Metro Manila.

    ADB to Help Strengthen Philippine Local Governance and Fiscal Management

    MANILA, PHILIPPINES – ADB will help the Philippine Government strengthen governance and financial management in local government units (LGUs) through a technical assistance (TA) grant of US$1.8 million. Read the news release.

    MANILA, PHILIPPINES - A US$500,000 grant from ADB will use information and communications technology (ICT) to help provide more efficient and effective public services in the Philippines. Read the news release.

    Gold Quill award of merit for feature articles on ADB's Philippine projects

    A series of feature articles published in top local newspapers last year was awarded a Gold Quill award of merit in the communication skills category for writing (features and editorials) by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), Philippines chapter. Jeff Hiday, Director General, ADB Department of External Relations and Rita Festin, ADB Senior Media and External Relations Officer accepted the award.

    22 March
    Finance Secretary Teves meets ADB President.

    Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Haruhiko Kuroda welcomed Finance Secretary Margarito Teves to the ADB headquarters in Mandaluyong on Wednesday. President Kuroda congratulated the Government for progress on front-loading measures to reduce the budget deficit. Secretary Teves, who also represents the Philippines in ADB's Board of Governors, the Bank's highest policy-making body, assured President Kuroda of the Government's continued commitment to following through on fiscal consolidation and reforms in the power and financial sectors. Secretary Teves thanked ADB for its support for the National Power Corporation's debt restructuring and for the Bank's efforts to facilitate reform and privatization in the Power Sector. He also welcomed proposed ADB support for the Southern Leyte landslide disaster and longer term assistance for country-wide disaster prevention and management.

    Joint Government-development partners workshop on harmonization and aid effectiveness

    The workshop supported operationalizing the Philippines' commitments under the Paris Declaration on harmonization and aid effectiveness. The objective is to develop a work plan, which helps achieve commitments of the Philippines and development partners. Tom Crouch, ADB Country Director, Philippine Country Office delivered opening remarks.

    7 March
    Inauguration of ADB Women's Resource Center in Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur.

    A new Women's Resource Center (WRC) was inaugurated in Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur, under the Asian Development Bank's Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, funded by the Government of Japan. It is part of a US$1 million technical assistance grant to benefit poor women market vendors in eight cities and municipalities in Mindanao. This innovative three-year poverty reduction project aims to build capacity and improve working conditions for poor women through WRCs that offer livelihood training and storage, washing, and day care facilities. The other local government units who are benefiting from the project are the cities of Panabo, Ozamiz, Kidapawan, and Surigao, and the municipalities of Cabadbaran, Buluan and Parang.     Signing of agreement for transfer assets of Napocor to PSALM and TransCo

    The agreement provided ADB's consent to transfer assets of the National Power Corporation (Napocor) to the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) and National Transmission Corporation (TransCo). This is a critical step in restructuring the Philippine power sector. During the day, she babysits up to five other toddlers as a volunteer day-care mom for children of poor working mothers.         THIS CITY, a popular tourist destination, prides itself as the cleanest and greenest in the country. But it may well be one of the noisiest cities too because of its tricycles.

        Just like any other bustling city in the country, the city has air and noise pollution problems. The pollution is mainly caused by having too many of these poorly-maintained two-wheeler and three-wheeler tricycles. Here, they are “king of the road,” unlike in other Philippine cities in the where it is the jeepney that reigns “king.” Read the full story.
