    ADB Promoting Enhanced Judicial Independence in the Philippines

    ADB Board inspects Smokey Mountain project

    Members of the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Board of Directors recently inspected the Smokey Mountain Remediation and Development project for which the ADB, through its Poverty and Environment Program, provided a $229,000 grant to improve the quality of life and provide sustainable livelihood support to 30,000 residents. Using an innovative public-private partnership, driven by strong community ownership, the project is developing solutions to address entrenched poverty and the long-term environmental health risks associated with the community's exposure to the two million-ton mountain of waste, built over 40 years, and to enhance the lives of the vast population that relies on recycling waste. The visit was hosted by Alternate Executive Director Marita Magpili-Jimenez (at left). Accompanying the group was Bert Guevara (second from right), consultant of the Sustainable Project Management group, which is implementing the grant.

    ADB Board inspects Pasig River project

    Members of the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Board of Directors recently inspected the Pasig River for which the ADB provided a loan package of $175 million to support its rehabilitation and environmental management. Activities under the loans include establishment of urban renewal areas along the river banks, development of linear parks and environment preservation areas, ferry stations for restarting the public ferry service, improved management of wastewater and solid waste, and resettlement of informal settlers in Rodriguez, Rizal province. The visit was hosted by Alternate Executive Director Marita Magpili-Jimenez (center). Accompanying the group was Dr. Ely Anthony Ouano (at left, second row), officer-in-charge/director of the Environmental Management Bureau and Atty. Zoilo Andin Jr. (at right, first row), officer-in-charge of the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission and Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Commission.

    Stronger Farm, Export Growth Boost Philippine Outlook

    MANILA, PHILIPPINES - The Philippine economy will grow 5.4% in 2006 supported by the strong performance of the agricultural sector and exports, according to a major ADB report released today. The forecast is up from 5% growth anticipated in April. The outlook for 2007 growth is unchanged at 5.3%. Read the full story
