Executive Director Jimenez Conducts Philippine Consultation Visits

Executive Director Jimenez conducts Philippine consultation visitsAmbassador and ADB Executive Director Marita Magpili-Jimenez inspected ongoing construction in the P330-million Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP) in Dauin, Negros Oriental which is part of the $60-million Southern Philippine Irrigation Sector Project. She was accompanied by Administrator Marcelino Tugaoen Jr., of the National Irrigation Administration, local irrigation officials and Mayor Rodrigo A. Alanano. She also went to a resettlement site of the farmers relocated from the P608-million Can-Asujan SRIP in Carcar, Cebu. For the $75-million Infrastructure for Rural Productivity Enhancement Sector project, she visited a 13-kilometer farm-to-market road and bridge in Kapalong, Davao del Norte and met with Panabo City Mayor Jose Silvosa on their proposed farm-to-market road. She also visited the regional center rehabilitated under the $25-million Technical Education and Skills Development project in Cebu with Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Deputy Director General Pastor Guiao.

ADB Director General Visits Panabo City Projects

DG Thapan visits Panabo City ADB projectsArjun Thapan, Director General, ADB Southeast Asia Department, visited women market vendors in Panabo City near the ADB-funded Women's Resource Center. The center provides livelihood seminars and trainings to augment the income of women. It also has a day care facility and a medical clinic. Mr. Thapan visited other ADB-funded projects, such as the transport terminal in the city under the Mindanao Basic Urban Services Sector Project and the $128 million state-of-the-art Davao International Airport. He also attended the 12th BIMP-EAGA ministers meeting.

Launching of Philippine Financial Literacy Program

Launching of Philippine National Literacy ProgramThe Philippine National Financial Literacy Program was recently launched at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas as part of the Government's Microfinance Development Program. Supported by an ADB policy-based loan approved in 2005, the program aims to enhance financial knowledge of poor clients and the viability of microfinance institutions. Eiichi Sasaki, ADB Financial Sector Specialist, delivered a speech.

Philippine Community of Practice for Local Government Planning and Expenditure Management

About 80 regional officials of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) formed the core team for the pilot Philippine Community of Practice. The event combined ADB's support for enhancing local government planning and expenditure management and the development of communities of practice. NEDA Officer-in-Charge and Deputy Director General Marcelina Bacani delivered the opening message.

Supreme Court Chief Justice at ADB Anti-Money Laundering WorkshopChief Justice Reynato Puno of the Supreme Court of the Philippines delivered the keynote address [ PDF: 146kb | 8 pages ] at the 2nd workshop on strenghtening the Philippine anti-money laundering regime at the ADB headquarters. The workshop builds on the findings of an earlier one in March. Jaime Zobel de Ayala speaks at ADB ConferenceJaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Chairman and CEO of Ayala Corporation, spoke at the Philippine breakout session on the first day of the "Mobilizing Aid for Trade: Focus Asia and Pacific" conference. Top global and regional trade and finance officials agreed on key measures to harness trade as an engine of growth and help close development gaps in the region.
